In this GIMP tutorial you’ll learn some techniques to remove the background from an image with hair. Cut out hair. I’m explaining step by step in this “How to in GIMP” so you’ll know how to make a cut out of an image with hair. I’m using layer masks, the clone tool and give some tips on the burn tool in GIMP. A lot of the techiniques I used I’ve learned and/or adapted from this video from blackmoondev: www.youtube.com The reason I adapated it is because I tried to make it easy to follow for gimp beginners as well. Here’s a link to the image I used: morguefile.com Long discussion with lots of hair cut out tips: sortitoutsi.net

Brilliant tutorial. Deleting background from a picture which contains details like hair can be time consuming.

Awesome! I’m a Gimp noob and quite a ways from doing this kind of thing, but it’s nice to know what I’ll be able to do eventually! Thanks so much.

Still having trouble using this technique I’m afraid. Trying to do it on a photo with a person that has different light sources on their skin. In essence I’m not able to easily white out them from the background.

Josh Howell says:

Had the same problem, I don’t know the solution either. I do know that if you go one point ahead you can move the previous one typically. Though I’ve had edges of images not take the points near the edge etc…

Josh Howell says:

I’ve been struggling with this for some time thx a million!

If ya make a mistake with the magic sissors (and you have 50+ points laid down) how do ya back up one “point”? I’ve always had to start over…….frustrating
